Edward Gay Lecture Given by Florence County Museum Curator

Free Public Lecture Series
Thursday, July 18, 2019
6:00 – 7:30pm

Edward Gay (1837 – 1928) was a prolific American landscape painter. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and a close friend of the influential artist George Inness.

Gay lived and worked in New York, but his life intersected with local South Carolina history when two of his children married into the Coker family of Hartsville.

This lecture by museum curator Stephen W. Motte will explore Gay’s unique connection to the South and discuss his art in the context of shifting philosophies which transformed American painting at the turn of the century.

The lecture will be held at the Florence County Museum, 111 West Cheves St, on Thursday, July 18, 2019 from 6pm to 7:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.
