About Historic Burch’s Mill
Burch’s Mill encompasses approximately 374 acres, primarily characterized by pine forested uplands, which account for 275 acres, including 22 acres of wildlife openings. The property also features 76 acres of wetlands, divided into about 20 acres of mill pond and beaver swamp, as well as forested wetland buffers along the Pee Dee River. In addition to its unique ecology, the site also holds archaeological significance. Preliminary archaeological studies have uncovered evidence of the Pee Dee’s prehistory, artifacts from Native American cultures dating back thousands of years, & remnants of Colonial settlement from the 1700s. Burch’s Mill holds unique significance in America’s history, as it was the site where Patriot General Francis Marion negotiated a treaty with Loyalist Major Micaiah Ganey in 1782 to help bring a close to Revolutionary War hostilities in South Carolina’s backcountry.
What’s Different About the Museum Roast This Year?
A new location!
Burch’s Mill
1604 Mill Branch Road
Pamplico, SC 29583
Why the new location?
Unfortunately, the Florence County Museum will be undergoing construction for the museum expansion project during the time of the Museum Roast. The museum facility will be unable to accommodate the event during construction.
How far is Burch's Mill from Florence?
It’s 17.6 miles from downtown Florence, about a 20-minute drive. Given the change in event location, we’ve elected to move the event to a Saturday afternoon.
Who owns Burch's Mill
Florence County purchased the historic property to preserve roughly 375 acres along the Pee Dee River and conserve the site’s ecology. The property will also provide opportunities for archeological research, historical education & other recreational uses to the county. It will serve as the host location for the Museum Roast while the Florence County Museum is under construction during the museum expansion project
