Opening Reception – Revelations: The Art of Leo Twiggs

June 11 @ 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Free

The Florence County Museum proudly presents Revelations: The Art of Leo Twiggs, exhibiting June 11 through October 11, 2026, on loan from the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC. Spanning more than six decades of work, with over 40 works created between 1961 and 2020, this landmark retrospective is the first major career survey of Twiggs’ work to be presented in his home state of South Carolina. The exhibition is organized into five thematic sections: Marooned, Awakenings, Transitions, Transformation, and Revelations, tracing the artist’s evolution through aesthetic and thematic relationships rather than strict chronology. Featuring his celebrated mastery of batik, a multi-layered wax-resist dyeing process in which deep color saturation onto cotton conveys the gravity of his subject matter, the exhibition explores Twiggs’ profound reflections on race, resilience, and the American experience. As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, his art offers a singular lens through which to examine our shared national story.

The public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Guest curator, Dr. Frank C. Martin II, who has written extensively about Twiggs’ work says,  “Through talent, faith, ambition, intelligence and hard work, Leo Twiggs has emerged from the challenging obscurity of his early life in a small, segregated community to become one of the South’s most nationally significant and innovative visual artists.” Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

Revelations: The Art of Leo Twiggs is organized by the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, South Carolina. The exhibition is guest curated by Dr. Frank C. Martin II.
