Eastern Carolina Contemporary Biennial

The Florence County Museum is proud to present the 2027 Eastern Carolina Contemporary Biennial, sponsored by Chick-fil-A of Florence. The objective of this project is to elevate the standard of regional contemporary art exhibitions by offering a professionally juried competition composed of the most competitive contemporary art and artists representing Eastern South Carolina. The competition occurs every two years and culminates in an exhibition to be presented in the FCM Special Exhibits Gallery.

Catherine Ann Bergstrom is the Associate Director of SOCO Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she has worked for the past six years. She holds a Master’s degree in Art History from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor’s degree in Art History and English from Wofford College. Her past experience includes serving as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Georgia and internships with the Mint Museum and the University of South Carolina Press.

In her role at SOCO Gallery, Catherine Ann works closely with artists and collectors and particularly values creating meaningful connections between collectors and individual works of art. She is a member of the Young Affiliates of the Mint and enjoys running and spending time with her husband, Austin, and their daughter, Frances.

Vincent Drake was born in 1976 in Udon Thani, Thailand to a Thai mother and American father and spent his formative years in a working class neighborhood in southeast Los Angeles. He attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute where he studied Fine Art Painting. Drake's art can be seen as an exploration of society's struggle with the individual and our human nature. His work has been exhibited throughout the United State and Canada. He currently finds himself home in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Entry Requirements

Only original works completed within the past two years which have not been previously exhibited at the Florence County Museum will be considered. Work delivered must be identical to the submission.
Artist must be a native or resident of one of the following counties: Chesterfield, Marlboro, Dillon, Darlington, Lee, Florence, Marion, Horry, Sumter, Clarendon, Williamsburg, Georgetown, Calhoun, Orangeburg, Dorchester, Berkeley, Aiken, Barnwell, Allendale, Hampton, Bamberg, Colleton, Hampton, Jasper, Beaufort, or Charleston.
Maximum of two entries per artist. Entry fee is $25.00 per work. Fee is to be paid online using credit card. Museum members receive one free entry.
No 2D work larger than 72” in width will be considered due to limitation of linear exhibit space. If submitting a single 2D work with more than one component, such as a diptych, the combined width of all components may not exceed the maximum allowed width.
Wall-mounted works juried into the exhibition must be prepared for two-point (D-rings) or cleat hanging, unless a secure, alternative proprietary method has been designed by the artist.
Framing is strongly preferred for any 2D work in a rectangular format. Unframed works on a sturdy support, or gallery-wrapped works on canvas, are permitted but must be fully media-covered around all wrapped edges.
Large scale 3D works will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis with attention to spatial dynamics and other potential limitations within the gallery. Ceiling mounted work is not strictly prohibited, but will be considered at the curator’s discretion in consultation with the Jurors Panel.
Freestanding and multi-component pieces must be assembled and fully prepared for installation by the artist at the time of delivery, including any hardware necessary for display. If the artist is unavailable to assist with installation, detailed installation instructions must be provided to FCM installer.
FCM reserves the right to exclude from the exhibition any object which is inherently unsecure, requires special installation and attention from the museum staff, or does not conform to the museum’s standards of quality and taste.
All artists are required to submit a statement no longer than 60 words.
All entries accepted must remain on display for the duration of the exhibition. The museum will retain a 30% commission on all accepted works sold during the exhibition dates.
There is no age requirement to enter. All entries are considered together by the jurors in a blind process, based solely on the artworks.
