Lecture Series- Fighters for Freedom

The general public is invited to join us Thursday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm for refreshements and a lecture from our Curator of Interpretations & Collections, Stephen W. Motte, on the paintings of William Henry Johnson featured in Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice. Attendees will learn about Johnson’s world in the 1940s, the history behind many of the figures Johnson chose to portray, and how the Fighters for Freedom series represents the culmination of Johnson’s work as an artist.

The lecture will begin at 5:45 pm.  The event is free and open to the public (no registration required).

Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Generous support for this project is provided by Art Bridges.

Additional exhibition support provided by the Trustees of the Florence Museum, the Florence County Museum Foundation, and the Eastern Carolina Community Foundation Florence County Museum Civil Justice Fund.

This exhibition is on view in the Focus Gallery from February 4, 2025 through August 10, 2025.
