Catherine Cross Tsintzos, Visiting Artist
Art and Agriculture Project

Join Visiting Artist, Catherine Cross Tsintzos, as she shares her knowledge and experience with Indigofera Suffruticosa.

Whether you live in the Pee Dee community or just want to know more about Indigo history in South Carolina, this workshop will provide you with facts about an area where Indigofera Suffruticosa has been grown for more than 275 years. Learn about the travels of indigo seed among Southeastern coastal communities and current day growers.

Examine Indigofera Suffruticosa, separate seeds from the pod, assist with planting in the Florence County Museum’s courtyard, and learn about dye gardens. Create a natural indigo vat and other types of popular indigo vats frequently used today. Vat care and disposal will be covered.

Learn and expand your experiences with basic Shibori resist techniques (Arashi/pole wrapping, Ori-Nui/stitching, Kumo/binding, Itajme/clamping), Batik, flour and clay resists. Unwaxing, cleaning and care of dyed items and project ideas for your dyed fabrics will be covered.

Eco-printing and over-dyeing with other natural dyes will be included, including a simple mordant introduction for paper and fabric, to learn how to combine indigo with other processes.

Educators, artists, quilters, sewers and indigo enthusiasts can all gain knowledge for working with paper, books and fabrics through hands-on exploration and experience gained through this workshop.
