Smiths' House of Violins

Charles D. Smith came to Florence in 1939 as a railroad engineer. He had a love of music and had spent years as a traveling fiddler, occasionally recording songs with early country music legend, Riley Puckett.

Smith became a charter violinist in the Florence Symphony Orchestra in the late 1940s. Then, from the basement of his modest home, he turned his passion for violin making into a local family business. Eventually, Smiths’ House of Violins developed a reputation that spanned decades, continents, and generations.

Join the Florence County Museum for a free evening lecture as curator Stephen W. Motte takes a look at the legacy and instruments of this unique Florence family.

The lecture will be held at the Florence County Museum, 111 West Cheves St, on Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 6pm to 7:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.
