Join us the second Saturday of each month from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for Family Day at the FCM. No registration required. Free of charge. \nBeautiful Butterflies on Slow Art Day \nSlow down and watch watercolors mix as you create your own butterfly using a wet into wet watercolor technique. As your paint dries\, visit our galleries using the Slow Art Day 2024 Guide.  On Slow Art Day\, in museums and in art spaces across the world visitors are encouraged to slow down\, quietly observe\, reflect\, and discover.  This Family Day is inspired by the butterfly in Titll\, The Salon (inscribed on verso) by Frank Cooper currently on view in the Inside Out exhibition in the Special Exhibit Gallery. \nIn addition\, a plant sale will take place in the museum’s courtyard from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The Florence County Museum is proud to partner with Healy Horticulture and Pee Dee Botanical Garden to host our first Spring Plant Sale. Many of the items available for purchase are represented in our pollinator garden and courtyard plantings. \nPDF with more information about the Spring Plant Sale.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

As always\, the safety of our guests\, staff\, and collections are our primary factor in all decisions made. \nAny announcements regarding additional schedule modifications will be made on social media\, flocomuseum.org\, and via email. \nBe Safe and Well\,\nFlorence County Museum Board \n—— \nOpening Reception\nThursday\, August 8\n5:00 to 7:00pm \nEdward B. Gay (1837 – 1928) was a prolific and widely exhibited American landscape painter best known for his luminous scenes of the New York countryside. He was an active lifelong member of the National Academy of Design\, achieving full Academician status in 1907. \nBeginning in 1898\, Gay made numerous trips to South Carolina to visit his daughter Vivien\, who had married James Lide Coker\, Jr. of Hartsville. Several years later\, his son Duncan also married into the Coker family. Because of these intermarriages\, many of Gay’s paintings became dispersed into private and museum collections in the South. \nThis exhibit chronicles the artist’s stylistic development and focuses on its parallels with emerging philosophies in American art from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. \nEdward Gay: An American Landscape Painter is made possible through the generosity of the Trustees of the Florence Museum. \nView the exhibit page.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

One long-term project is the continued search for the wrecked flagship of the Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón expedition\, an early Spanish endeavor to colonize North America. The Capitana\, one of six vessels used in a failed settlement attempt by the Spanish Crown to gain a foothold in the New World in 1526\, was lost when it grounded and sank approaching the coastline of South Carolina\, believed between Winyah Bay and the Santee River Inlets. This illustrated presentation will discuss the ongoing efforts by the Institute to search for this early 16th-century shipwreck along with other unfortunate casualties along the Pee Dee coastline. \nBiography: James Spirek is the State Underwater Archaeologist and Head of the Maritime Research Division at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina\, Columbia. Employed there since 1996 and holding his current position since 2012\, Jim’s responsibilities include managing and studying the maritime archaeological legacy residing in the lakes\, rivers\, and coastal waters of South Carolina. He has participated in numerous projects documenting a diverse range of sunken prehistoric and historic watercraft\, Colonial and Native American sites\, Civil War warships and blockade runners\, and other underwater archaeological remains in state waters. Jim is currently leading two maritime archeological prospecting ventures searching for shipwrecks off Port Royal Sound and the Santee River Inlets. Jim received his B.A. in History from George Mason University in 1987 and his M.A. in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University in 1993. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n1:45 PM – 2:15 PM\nTitle: “Data Recovery Excavations at the Florence/Gamble Hotel” \nAbstract: In September 2023\, Aghatech Industries LLC conducted archaeological investigations at the original site of the Florence Hotel (c.1860-1893). Built by the Northeastern Railroad Company in 1860\, the plan was for the Hotel—the largest wooden building in South Carolina during its time—to attract railway travelers to buy town lots. The plan succeeded: lots were bought and developed\, and from them\, the city of Florence came into being. This presentation details the archaeology conducted to recover the lost history of the Hotel\, and especially the back lot of the Hotel\, where enslaved Africans and later African American free persons labored to provide guests with horse and carriage transport\, clean clothes\, and bed linens\, baths and shaves\, and meals that made the Florence Hotel the “best eating house South of the Potomac”. \nBiography: Dr. Andrew Agha has been practicing archaeology in South Carolina and the southeast since 1997 and is currently CEO of Aghatech Industries LLC. He has worked for various private and public entities and institutions and has taught Anthropology at the University of South Carolina-Columbia\, the College of Charleston\, and Coastal Carolina University. His main research deals with how colonial Carolina origins were influenced and shaped by experimental scientific agriculture\, where the intersection of early English sciences\, enslaved Africans\, and English “country estate” development during the 1670s and 1680s created Carolina’s “plantation society”.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n2:30 PM – 3:00 PM\nTitle: “Interpreting the Copperhead Bluff Site\, a Mississippian Period Site on Great Pee Dee River\, Florence County\, South Carolina” \nBiography: Christopher Judge has studied Native Americans in South Carolina for over thirty-five years. The lens that informs my research is the anthropological archaeology of precontact cultures.  Additionally\, Judge has conducted oral history research in living Native American communities throughout South Carolina. Currently\, he is the Assistant Director of the Native American Studies Center at USC Lancaster\, teaching anthropology and archaeology courses. Judge holds B.A. (1983) and M.A. (1987) degrees in Anthropology from USC Columbia. \n[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n3:15 PM – 3:45 PM\nTitle: Archaeological Excavations at the Copperhead Bluff site in Florence \nAbstract: Archaeological excavations at the Copperhead Bluff site in Florence County recovered fragments of a small Native American ceramic vessel. As a primitive technology experiment\, Southerlin has produced replicas of what he interprets the whole vessel to look like. Southerlin will briefly discuss digging and processing the clay\, reconstructing a design image on a wood paddle\, forming the clay into a specific vessel form\, and firing the finished vessel. \nBiography: Bobby Southerlin grew up in North and South Carolina and graduated from Spring Valley High School near Columbia. Southerlin completed his undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina and graduate work in Southeastern Archaeology at the University of Georgia. In 2003\, he founded the Cultural Resources Management firm Archaeological Consultants of the Carolinas. Inc. in Clayton\, North Carolina\, soon after partnered with Dawn Reid. Southerlin\, now retired\, is still involved with selected field projects and volunteer work occasionally. How? Why? Discoveries and new science can now tell the story. Hidden deep in sacred caves lies evidence of when the rains stopped coming – and for how long. Advanced bone analysis from hundreds of graves tells us what the Maya ate\, where they came from\, and what changed in their lives. Lidar strips away the jungle and CGI shows their world in a way never seen before\, revealing the incredible geo-engineering and complexity that allowed cities to grow to immense size – perhaps too big. The most amazing new find – the KomKom vase – is the only written account of its kind\, detailing events at the cusp of collapse. It speaks of a story of war\, family power struggles between divine god-kings\, failing power in the face of climate change\, and murder. Experts lead us deep into the sacred caves to the site of escalating offerings\, human sacrifice\, and in final desperation\, child sacrifice. In the thick jungle\, key sites reveal enigmatic piles of goods and bodies buried in palace rubble\, as chaos and desperation grew\, until – the end of their world. The Fall of the Maya Kings is a one-hour documentary that traces the story of the ancient Maya collapse\, from inside the chaos – as told by the ancient Maya themselves.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”40px”][vc_video link=”https://youtube.com/shorts/AlXPL-Z3LLI?si=R8EIF30GShA2aQ_t” css=””][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Curiosity Trek! Episode 4: “A Submarine Commander’s Lucky Charm” – 8 min. \nDirector and Producer Andrew Davis\, SCETV\, (USA) This episode of Curiosity Trek! dives into the history behind the legendary “Life Preserver” of Lieutenant George Dixon – a gold $20 coin that saved his life at the Battle of Shiloh in the American Civil War. He carried this coin with him everywhere he went – even during the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley’s fateful run in February 1864. This tale was originally thought to be legend\, but myth became fact when the coin was discovered among Dixon’s remains inside the Hunley. Hunley expert Mike Scafuri of the Warren-Lasch Conservation Center in Charleston joins host Andrew Davis to elaborate on this fascinating artifact![/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”40px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
